Abstract
858,247. Nuclear reactors. A. E. I.-J. THOMPSON NUCLEAR ENERGY CO. Ltd. March 11, 1959 [March 18, 1958], No. 8684/58. Class 39(4). A graphite moderator structure comprises spaced stacks of graphite blocks 1 separated by slabs 3 which locate the stacks against each other. The blocks and slabs have minimum Wigner growth in the directions of the arrows x, y, z, and are located by keys 6 and keyways 7 in abutting faces. The stacks have coolant channels with fuel element locating slots, and the keys and keyways extend only part of the way in towards the channels, so that the channel wall is not broken and leakage of coolant gas is reduced.
