Abstract
928,414. Moderator structures. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. June 20, 1960 [June 22, 1959], No. 21394/59. Class 39 (4). In a reactor moderator core formed of graphite blocks, neutron irradiation for long periods at high temperatures is said to produce shrinkage of the graphite. The graphite blocks and tiles forming the core are keyed together to prevent the shrinkage distorting the fuel channels in the blocks. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, each block engages those adjacent to it through keys and keyways. To prevent relative movement between blocks in associated layers the keys are extended across the interface. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3, the blocks 11, 12 engage the tile 13 at the flanges 14 and recesses 15, 16. The adjacent tiles are engaged by keys 21, 23 and keyways 19, 20. Rotational displacement is prevented by the key 22 and slots 24. Slots 25, 26 accommodate thermocouple leads. Specifications 782,922, 784,291 and 784,292 are referred to.
