Abstract
1,025,617. Moderator structures. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. April 17, 1964 [April 10, 1963], No. 14427/63. Heading G6C. The graphite moderator 12, of a nuclear reactor, is formed of blocks 11 having coolant channels 13 the walls of which are grooved, at 14, normal to the channel axis. The channels may also be formed by shaping the outer adjacent surfaces of neighbouring blocks. Thermal and Wigner strains are produced in the blocks by irradiation within the reactor and the resultant axial stresses round the channels are relieved by the grooves.
