812,544. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 26, 1950 [June 29, 1949], No. 15862/50. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(4). A nuclear reactor is characterized in that a reflector structure is provided inside the reactor core. Preferably there is also a reflector structure surrounding the core. It is explained that the use of an internal reflector increases the average heat which may be extracted over the area of the core. The reflector structures may comprise a moderator material such as graphite, heavy water, beryllium or beryllia or may comprise a moderator having a lattice of fertile material such as uranium depleted of fissile material, or thorium, or the reflector structure may comprise portions of each of these types. For the internal reflector the central part may be of moderator material and the outer part a lattice structure, whereas the external reflector has an inner part of a lattice structure and the outer part of moderator material.
