Abstract

858,383. Nuclear reactors. A. E. I.-J. THOMPSON NUCLEAR ENERGY CO. Ltd. April 10, 1959 [March 24, 1958], No. 9371/58. Class 39(4). A nuclear reactor core is formed of graphite blocks 1 stacked vertically and separated by the slabs 4, 5, to allow for Wigner growth, with the vertical fuel channel 2 formed in both. The stacks are separated from each other by the abutting, projecting edges of 4, 5 in adjacent stacks. To secure the blocks and slabs together in a stack the faces 8, 9 are provided with ribs 6 and grooves 7 which are offset from the channel to prevent leakage of coolant. To prevent jamming of the fuel element, due to uneven expansion of the blocks and slabs, the edges of the circular apertures 2 may be chamfered. The direction of the graphite grain is indicated by the arrows.
