846,865. Nuclear reactors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 14, 1957 [Oct. 14, 1955], No. 29438/55. Class 39(4). [Also in Group X] A graphite block for a moderator structure comprises a channel 11 for fuel elements extending lengthwise of the block but offset diagonally from its centre. Thus when the blocks, having minimum rate of Wigner growth in their lengthwise direction, are assembled into the structure, Fig. 3, with spacing to allow transverse growth, a square lattice is provided without allowing a straight neutron path through the structure. To achieve this spacing, eight identical pins 14 are inserted in each block, each pin having a recessed end 18 into which the smaller end of a similar pin fits. These pins have minimum Wigner growth along their length. The corner 19 of each block remote from the fuel channel is chamfered to allow clearance. The fuel channel is aligned in adjacent blocks by a short graphite tube fitting in recesses 12. Vertical control rod channels are formed by milling out quadrants in the appropriate corners of certain blocks or by milling out semi-circular recesses in the sides of blocks.
