Abstract
849,445. Nuclear reactors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 4, 1957 [Oct. 9, 1956], No. 30810/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(4). In a nuclear reactor the moderator consists of vertical columns of carbon blocks mounted to permit Wigner growth and to reduce neutron streaming. In each column, separation between blocks is effected by a pair of carbon tubes between each two blocks. The directions of minimum Wigner growth of the blocks and tubes are all mutually at right angles, those of the blocks being parallel to the column axis, e.g. vertical and those of the tubes being horizontal and perpendicular to each other. Fuel channels extend axially through the columns and the blocks and tiles have mutually engaging keys and keyways which are off-set so as not to intersect the fuel channels. The tiles extend beyond the vertical faces of the blocks and engage the edges of tiles in adjacent columns to space the columns apart. The keys and keyways are cut so as to give adjacent blocks in a column a relative angular displacement so that no direct passage exists between columns horizontally and neutron streaming is reduced.
