Abstract
831,547. Nuclear reactors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. April 10, 1958 [April 10, 1957], No. 11818/57. Class 39(4). In a heterogeneous nuclear reactor the moderator is built up of separate graphite units fitted together, by means of keys and re cesses formed in the unit surfaces. The assembly has a minimum Wigner growth distortion and no tightening after growth Vertical coolant channels are formed in the units which fit together to maintain coolant leak age at a minimum. As shown, the moderator blocks 1, 4 are arranged vertically, separated by the tubes 2, 3 and en close the cooling channels 7. The block and tile grains are vertical and horizontal respectively. The adjacent columns of blocks and tiles make contact only at the faces 5, 6 of tiles 2, 3 which extend beyond the corresponding faces of bricks 1, 4. In each column the minimum Wigner growth occurs vertically, that is in the grain direction of blocks 4. The block maximum Wigner growth occurs laterally, without restraint, as the adjacent blocks are separated by 5, 6. The tube minimum Wigner growth occurs laterally at the contacting surfaces 5, 6.
