Abstract

1,182,665. Moderator structures. ATOMIC POWER CONSTRUCTIONS Ltd. 9 March, 1967, No. 11173/67. Heading G6C. The moderator structure of a gas cooled nuclear reactor is formed of graphite blocks arranged in vertical columns, in which the lower surface of block 2 is formed with projecting keys 10, 11, 12 and 13 located in channels 5, 6, 7 and 8 in the upper surface of the adjacent block, 1. The keys 10, 12 are tapered along a block diameter, at surfaces 16, 17 to facilitate a rocking or tilting action, upon the lower block, when distortion of the graphite occurs. Longitudinal keyways 20 are formed in the block outer faces and intersticial blocks, located between the columns, are shaped to engage the longitudinal keyways as locking members.
