Abstract

1,243,374. Moderator structure. BRITISH NUCLEAR DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION Ltd. 15 Aug., 1968 [5 March, 1968], No. 10675/68. Heading G6C. In a gas cooled, graphite moderated nuclear reactor, the graphite columns, 1, are arranged in groups comprising one centre column and six outer columns. The fuel rod elements, 4, may be accommodated in a single channel 3, or in individual channels 6 and 8. A central tube 5 or channel 7 receives the servicing machine grab by which the moderator defining the fuel channels is removed, with the fuse, at the servicing intervals. Controlrod channels, 2, are formed in interstitial positions. The fuel elements consist of uranium oxide or uranium carbide particles, coated with graphite or silicon carbide, contained in sealed silicon carbide tubes. The coolant gas may be either carbon dioxide or helium.
