Abstract

1,233,832. Reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 5 May, 1970 [9 May, 1969], No. 23878/69. Heading G6C. A reactor has neutron absorbing material for flux shaping disposed within fuel assemblies, there being access to the material for varying its neutron absorption whilst the fuel assemblies are in their operating position in the reactor without breaching the coolant circuit. The fuel assemblies may each comprise a cluster of sheathed fuel rods arranged about a central hollow tie and suspended from a closure plug at one end of a coolant tube, a thimble tube extending from outside the plug along the longitudinal axis of the tie with the closed end of the thimble tube within the tie, and the neutron absorbing material being contained within the thimble tube. The neutron absorbing material may be gaseous, e.g. Kr or Xe, and ducted to the thimble tube from control equipment whereby it can be pressurized to vary its density and hence its neutron absorption. Alternatively, solid, liquid or gaseous neutron absorbing material may be contained within a replaceable capsule which is contained by the thimble tube. Periodically, whilst the reactor is in operation the capsules containing neutron absorbing material may be withdrawn and re-arranged throughout the core, or, where the material is gaseous and simply ducted to the thimble tube, it is varied in pressure to shape the flux pattern across the core.
