Abstract
731,474. Producing radioactive substances. ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA, Ltd. Feb. 19, 1953 [March 6, 1952], No. 4731/53. Class 39 (4). Material for neutron irradiation in a nuclear reactor is housed in a section of a nuclear fuel rod, to avoid the provision of special openings in the reactor shield. The rod comprises uranium 14 screwed to a hollow housing section 16, screwed in turn to the next section and is within a sheathing 17. The material to be irradiated is inserted into chambers A, B through recesses 21, 23 before the rod is screwed together. Cooling liquid 19 within a jacket 18 surrounds the rod. The section 16 and.sheathing 17 are of aluminium so that after removal from the reactor the irradiated material may be retrieved by leaching, this action being aided by holes 26. In a modified housing, Fig. 2, one side 32 is removed for introduction of the material.
