Abstract

1,101,263. Fuelling reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 8 Oct., 1965 [16 Oct., 1964], No. 42357/64. Heading G6C. A fuelling facility for a reactor core 1 (two such cores being shown in the drawings) housed in a vault 2 formed by shielding 3 comprises a rotating cover 6 mounted eccentrically in a second cover 7 rotatable in the roof of the vault, the cover 6 carrying two retractible snouts 8a, 8b either one of which may be connected to a selected core channel 5 by rotation of the covers. As shown, each core 1 has its own set of covers and snouts. A shielded flask 16 having a hoisting-mechanism 16 is movable transversely on rails 17 on a carriage 18 running on longitudinal rails 19 whereby the flask may be releasably connected to a selected snout 8a or 8b of either core 1. In use, the flask is located above a port 11, picks up a new fuel element 10 from a store 9 and is then moved to be coupled to a snout. An irradiated fuel element is withdrawn into the flask and the new fuel element lowered therefrom into the core. The flask is moved above a port 14 and the irradiated fuel element 13 is lowered into a pond 12.
