Abstract

1,226,514. Reactors. SIEMENS A.G. 15 Jan., 1970 [17 Jan., 1969], No. 2103/70. Heading G6C. A sodium-cooled reactor comprises a vessel 1 closed by a rotatable cover 2 and containing a core 3 through which extend channels 4 accommodating neutron-absorber control rods. The control rod drive system includes a drive rod 5 extending through the cover 2 by way of an opening 7. This opening 7 is stepped and contains a shielding plug 8 which serves at the same time to guide the rod 5. The rod 5 is also guided within a guide tube 6 by means of a gripper head 51 at the lower end of the rod 5. The drive mechanism 10 for the rod 5 is mounted above the cover 2. The dismantling of the control rod drive system involves the uncoupling and removal of the drive mechanism 10 from the rod 5, whereafter the control rod is released from the gripper head 51 and the rod 5 and the gripper head 51 are upwardly withdrawn. The plug 8 is carried out of the opening 7 ahead of the gripper head 51 by a ring 9 mounted on the rod 5. The opening 7 may then be re-sealed by means of a solid shielding plug. Conversely, the plug 8 returns behind the gripper head 51 into the opening 7 in the cover 2 when the rod 5 is reintroduced.
