Abstract

787,971. Nuclear reactors. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. June 19, 1956 [June 30, 1955], No. 18972/56. Class 39(4). Fuel elements such as sheathed rods of uranium, are discharged from horizontal channels 2 in the moderator structure of a reactor and conveyed by gravity along shoots 5, 7, 10, 12 to a receiver 15 outside the reactor shield 4. When a rod is pushed out of its channel it enters one of a series of gutter-shaped shoots 5 which are inclined at 45 degrees to serve a number of channels. From a shoot 5 a rod is guided into a single helical shoot 7 arranged inside or outside, Fig. 4, a cylinder 8 and then along a straight shoot 10 through the concrete shield 4 to a further helical shoot 12 and thence to a truck 15 containing sand as shock-absorbing material, within a chamber 14. The reactor and hence the chamber 14 may contain carbon dioxide under pressure as coolant.
