Abstract

789,022. Nuclear reactors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. June 8, 1956 [June 10, 1955], No. 16850/55. Class 39(4). From a nuclear reactor cooled by a fluid under pressure, fuel elements are removed or inserted by using an auxiliary pressure vessel 16 temporarily sealed to the reactor so that the temperature and pressure of the coolant is maintained. The fuel elements are housed in vertical passages 2 in a graphite core 1 and a tube 13 is aligned with each passage. Preparatory to charging or discharging fuel elements the vessel 16 is attached to the top of a tube 13 by a breech-block device 18, and is filled with coolant gas at the same pressure as exists in the reactor. An oval door 14, Fig. 2, closing the top of each tube 13, is inclined and removed to within the vessel 16 by remote control, taking with it a concrete plug 19 on a chain 20. Still by remote control, pressure is exerted on the top fuel element, causing a pin below the bottom element to shear and allow all elements in that passage 2 to fall and slide on to a plug 28. This plug 28 may be withdrawn into an auxiliary pressure vessel 26 from which it can be extracted. In an alternative arrangement, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), a single auxiliary pressure vessel is employed below the reactor and is positioned below one of the passages 2 to charge or discharge fuel elements. The core 1 is supported on a grid 3 and brackets 4 within a pressure vessel 5, supported in turn by brackets 6 on legs 7. Coolant gas is admitted at 8 and extracted at 9. Rods 11 control the reactor. The core 1 has an outer reflector portion 1B comprising graphite blocks without fuel elemerits. A further auxiliary vessel may be used for charging the control rods or for other services.
