Abstract
866,541. Handling nuclear fuel elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. July 10, 1959 [July 26, 1958], No. 24122/58. Class 39(4). An arrangement permitting partly irradiated fuel elements which have been removed from a reactor to be stored in a shielded enclosure outside the reactor containment until they are required to be replaced in the core comprises discharge tubes 10 extending from the charge face 4 through the outer containment 7 of a gas-cooled reactor 2 having a pressure vessel 1. A refuelling machine 6 movable over the face 4 may be connected to any one of the tubes 10, the latter having valves 39 and terminating within a steel-walled. gas-tight enclosure 13 having a containment 16. A carriage 19 is rotatable on a tube 22 within the enclosure 13 and has a plurality of fuel element storage tubes 23 arranged in concentric circles whereby the tubes of a particular circle may be successively aligned with a corresponding tube 10. A coolant gas supply at a pressure slightly above atmospheric is introduced into the carriage 19 (Fig. 2, not shown) and flows upwardly through the tubes 23 and also through the tubes 10 when the valves 39 are open. In operation the fuel elements removed from the core 2 are retained in the machine 6 under pressurised cooling for the dissipation of fission product heating the pressure in the machine then being reduced and the machine connected to one of i the tubes 10 whereupon a string of fuel ele- \ ments is lowered by a grab into an empty tube 23. The carriage 19 is rotated and the machine 6 moved for connection to the other tubes 10 as required until all the fuel elements have been stored in the carriage. Inspection of a string of fuel elements may be carried out by lifting a string 37 into a cave 43 through one of a number of tubes 42 similar to the tubes 10, observation being made from a platform 40 through a window 43a.
