Abstract

1,031,559. Storing radio-active material. REACTOR CENTRUM NEDERLAND. April 28, 1965 [May 1, 1964], No. 17918/65. Heading G6R. A storage rack for fissile material is formed of metal or concrete and provides a series of shelves or trays which carry the material and which are separated by either spaces or plates of a neutron-absorber to prevent the formation of a critical mass of fissile material. To prevent criticality being attained by the accumulation of a liquid moderator, e.g. water, in the trays carrying the fissile material, the latter are inclined to its horizontal to permit free drainage of liquid moderator. The separating spaces are designed to accept liquid moderator from the shelves, so as to decouple the separate fissile masses, in the event of immersion of the rack. Each separating space has a transparent front wall to enable the interior to be clearly viewed. A reduction in the size of the arrangement is effected if the separating spaces are replaced by absorbing slabs. The arrangement is intended for nuclear fuel U-235 of not more than 3% enrichment.
