A pressure vessel for a swimming pool nuclear reactor with a forced-circulation watercooled core is pierced with channels in the thickness of its wall for a cooling water flow parallel with the direction of the water flow through a core, each channel containing a bar whose cross-section is substantially similar to that of the channel and which has means for being centered in the channel in order to reduce the water coolant flow through the channel to a thin film. Such a coolant flow causes little disturbance of the neutron flux outside the pressure vessel. In the swimming pool reactor shown in Fig. 1, the core 1 comprises juxtaposed fuel elements 2 in which the fissile material is in the form of parallel plates cooled by water which is forced upwards through a pressure vessel 4 surrounding the core 1, from an inlet sump 5 to an outlet conduit 7. The pressure vessel 4 comprises four prismatic elements 8-11 placed one above another. The elements 9, 10 which surround the reactor core are made of " Zircaloy," a zirconium alloy which absorbs gamma radiation, while the bottom element 8 and the top element 11 which experience loss gamma radiation are made of aluminium. Vertical parallel channels such as 12, 13 are pierced inside the pressure vessel walls and contain bars, such as 18, 19, of " Zircaloy " to limit the flow of cooling water to a thin film. The cooling water enters the channels 12, 13 through apertures 14, 15 at the bottom of the pressure vessel and leaves through apertures 16, 17 at the top of the pressure vessel, being derived from the main water flow. Some of the bars 12, 13 serve merely to limit the cooling water flow while others serve additionally to assemble the pressure vessel elements 8-11 or to secure the pressure vessel to the sump 5.
