Abstract

1,150,000. Fuelling reactors. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 5 April, 1968 [6 April, 1967], No. 16606/68. Heading G6C. A reactor comprises a pressure vessel 18 housing a core cooled by heavy water circulating through inlet and outlet ducts 26, 28 and is disposed in a pool 10 of light water surrounded by concrete 12. To refuel the reactor a machine A carried by a travelling crane 30 is aligned with and sealed to a chimney 20 upstanding from the vessel 18. The seal is established between shaped ends 50, 54 after removal of a cap 24 and is bounded by closure valves 22, 52. A fuel assembly 38 may be raised by a grab (Fig. 3, not shown) into a lower part 46 of the machine A. A heat exchanger 36 immersed in the pool 10 is connected between the upper and lower ends of the part 46 whereby heavy water from the reactor in the part 46 circulates by natural convection and cools the fuel assembly.
