Abstract

966, 366. Fuel elements. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. July 12, 1963 [July 16, 1962], No. 27715/63. Heading G6C. A nuclear fuel element comprises a series of parallel plates of fissile material held within a rectangular casing, two of the walls of said casing including a consumable poison substance. The inside faces of the front and rear walls of the casing are preferably aluminium or zirconium and, as viewed in Fig. 1, are slotted to locate the ends of the enriched uranium fuel plates 5. The casing walls 6, those parallel with the fuel plates, also act as sheaths for two fission poison inserts 8; the poison utilized is boron or boron 10, and it may be combined in the metal forming the walls 6 and 7 in zones 8 near the centres thereof, or the zones 8 may be unitary plates of boronated aluminium clad in the material of the casing wall.
