Abstract

1369700 Producing radioisotopes UNION CARBIDE CORP 22 Dec 1971 [23 Dec 1970] 59737/71 Heading G6C A target for production of a radioisotope, e.g. technecium-99 from the parent isotope, molybdenum-99, comprises a sealed metal vessel (the figure, not shown) with an access port and a continuous, uniform layer of fissile material bonded to the interior walls thereof. The fissile material is uranium or plutonium, and deposition may be effected electrolytically from a specified uranyl compound in solution and enriched in U-235. In a nuclear reactor, the target is enclosed in a secondary container and gas is circulated inside the latter to remove heat generated in the target.
