Abstract

706,503. Producing nuclear reactions. NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL. June 8, 1951 [Dec. 5, 1950], No. 13606/51. Class 39(4) A substance between spherical (or part spherical) shells 3, 16, is irradiated with neutrons of velocities predominantly within a selected range by placing fissile material 7 at the centre, surrounded by a moderator 10, the whole device being subjected to irradiation by thermal neutrons. The velocity range is determined by the thickness of moderator (i.e. radius of the inner shell), The shells are of low capture cross-section material, such as Al, Zr, Be or Pb and the moderator may be H 2 O or a hydrocarbon liquid and is circulated by a pump P. U<SP>233</SP>, U<SP>235</SP>, Pu or enriched uranium comprises the fissile material. Fig. 1 (not shown), illustrates a hemispherical device.
