614,386. Atomic piles. CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE, (formerly CAISSE NATIONALE DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE). April 30, 1940, No. 7782. Convention date, May 2, 1934. [Class 39 (i)] In an atomic pile comprising fissile, moderating, and possibly diffusing or absorbing, substances, the chain reaction is controlled by repeatedly modifying the spatial distribution of the substances. Parts of the fissile substance may be moved relatively to one another or this substance may have recesses into and out of which moderating, absorbing or diffusing material can be moved. Rotatable discs comprising sectors of absorbing and diffusing materials, e.g. iron and water, may be partially engaged in the fissile material or pile may have side walls of diffusing material which may be moved away from and towards the pile. In a further modification an independent controllable neutron source is also employed. The control may in any case be effected by relays actuated by thermal instruments or ionization chambers responding to temperature or energy developed within the pile or by changes of specific gravity or composition of the fissile material.
