Abstract

1,151,356. Controlling reactors. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY (EURATOM). 25 Aug., 1966 [26 Aug., 1965], No. 36752/65. Heading G6C. In a fast nuclear reactor, rapid decrease in reactivity is effected by separation of the fuel rods due to temperature induced dimension changes. An outer circumferential securing band round the rod assembly permits lateral expansion of the core and may also fracture, at a predetermined expansion, to effect a further separation of the rods, to produce shut-down. The fuel rod tapered upper ends are each located by the surfaces of a horizontal grid formed of separate elements closely engaging the tapers. The grid elements are urged vertically downwards into engagement with the fuel rod tapers by gravity or springs. The separate grid elements are forced apart, against the action of the securing bands, as the fuel rod upper ends are moved vertically upwards by a thermally induced increase in length.
