Abstract

897,232. Fuel elements. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 24, 1960 [June 29, 1959], No. 22194/59. Class 39(4). A fuel assembly comprises fuel rods supported in a casing by spacers such as grids 4; the fuel in each rod is divided by heatinsulating material which is in register with the spacers so as to avoid the formation of hot spots in the fuel. The fuel rods shown have uranium oxide tubes in stainless steel sheaths, the tubes being divided by MgO discs 7 and filled with MgO at 6; their end caps are insulated by MgO discs. Several such assemblies may be joined in a "string" supported by a member having a lifting head and splines to locate it in a channel of a reactor. Specification 883,030 is referred to.
