In a graphite-moderated gas cooled nuclear reactor, periodic annealing of the graphite core to release the Wigner energy is avoided by maintaining the core at a temperature above that at which self-annealing takes place. A fraction of the hot gases leaving the reactor fuel channels is reintroduced into the core structure, through which it passes by means of the Wigner gaps between the graphite blocks. The temperature of the core is controlled by regulating the rate of flow of the reintroduced hot gases, which may be introduced at the control rod channels or into similar channels between the control rods.
