1450607 Nuclear reactors HOCHTEMPERATUR-REAKTORBAU GmbH 17 Oct 1974 [20 Oct 1973] 45024/74 Heading G6C In a nuclear reactor of the pebble bed type using a charge 1 of spherical operating elements surrounded by a reflector casing 10, 11, 12 with cooling gas flowing downwardly from 11 to 18, the marginal zone 9 of the charge has a lower content of fissile material than the rest of the charge 8. Neutron flux in the marginal zone is lower and thus radiation damage to the graphite reflector is reduced. The charge may comprise fuel spheres and graphite spheres, the proportion of graphite spheres being greater in the marginal zone 9. The outer coolant pipes 18 may be throttled so as to increase the temperature of the gas passing through the marginal zone. Spheres may be withdrawn continuously at 3 at a rate such that the desired final burnup is achieved with a single passage through the reactor.
