Abstract

In a nuclear reactor having separate fast and thermal regions, a reflector is mounted between the two, in order to limit neutron coupling. The ratio of the thermal fluxes on the two sides of the reflector is defined as a function of the albedo of the reflector material. Control of the reactivity is effected by variation of the reflector thickness. Initially, power is produced mainly in the thermal region and as fuel is consumed there, the reflector thickness is reduced to permit thermal neutron leakage into the fast region to raise the power therein. Simultaneously, an increased diffusion of neutrons from the fast to the thermal region takes place, the whole reaction being maintained by this neutron flow with sufficient excess reactivity for xenon override. The fast region contains high enrichment fuel and has a low power density while the thermal region contains low enrichment fuel and has a high power density. The reflector consists of a metallic oxide clad in stainless steel. The coolant may be light or heavy water, or gas, with the distribution arranged so as to restrict the moderation effect in the fast region. The high enrichment fuel comprises U-233, U-235 and Pn-239.
