Fuel element channels of a nuclear reactor are at least in part conically shaped so as to tend to equalize the rate of heat-exchange between the fuel elements and the coolant. As shown, the channel converges at a point q of high heat release from the fuel rod a, and diverges at a point s of low heat release; the flow rate of coolant in the direction A is thus increased where the channel is convergent and decreased where the channel is divergent. The walls of the channels may be corrugated transversely; these corrugations may be helical, in which case they are interrupted periodically to prevent a gyratory movement of the coolant. The moderator c may be graphite or heavy water.
