Abstract

1,029,837. Nuclear reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Aug. 22, 1962 [Aug. 25, 1961], No. 30816/61. Heading G7C. In a nuclear reactor having a core with fuel rods spaced from one another and means for circulating liquid coolant through the spaces between rods, the rate of mass flow of coolant required is reduced by filler members adapted to exert a moderating action and disposed within and partly filling the spaces between fuel rods. As shown in Fig. 2, each fuel assembly may comprise a number of fuel rods 8 arranged in a square lattice within an elongated box 2. In the centre of each set of four fuel rods is a filler member 10 comprising a thin tubular jacket of zirconium or stainless steel enclosing moderator material which may be a fluid such as light and/or heavy water or a hydrocarbon or a solid such as graphite, beryllium or beryllia. If the enclosed moderator material is the same as the coolant, the ends of each member 10 may be provided with apertures of Venturi form to allow limited flow into and out of the member; alternatively, the ends of each member may be sealed to form a fluid-tight enclosure. The reactor may be of the boiling water or pressurized water type, and the moderator-coolant may be light and/or heavy water.
