Abstract

In a heterogeneous nuclear reactor, the axial distribution of heat flux to the core is rendered uniform by a selected axial distribution of fuel. Vertical fuel pins, are arranged in groups, each of which has two sets of pins. The pins of the first set contain a uniform fuel mixture throughout their lengths and those of the second set have a reduced fuel concentration in their central sections. Fertile material may also be placed in the central sections. The dimensions of the central sections are determined in accordance with the degree of heat flux change required and may incorporate either thorium or depleted uranium.
