Abstract

In a fast reactor using U<SP>238</SP>-Pu<SP>239</SP> as the principal fuel, part of the fuel core consists of another fuel selected from the group Th<SP>232</SP>- U<SP>233</SP>, U<SP>238</SP>-U<SP>233</SP>, Th<SP>232</SP>-U<SP>235</SP>, Th<SP>232</SP>-Pu<SP>239</SP>, and U<SP>238</SP>-U<SP>235</SP>, in order to reduce the coolant void reactivity coefficient. For example a spherical core may consist of a central portion of Th<SP>232</SP>-U<SP>233</SP> fuel surrounded by the U<SP>238</SP>- Pu<SP>239</SP> fuel; the blanket consists of U<SP>238</SP> and the coolant is sodium. Alternatively, the core consists of a spherical shell of Th<SP>232</SP>-U<SP>233</SP> interposed between a central sphere and an outer shell of U<SP>238</SP>-Pu<SP>239</SP>. In Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) parallel fuel pins consist of the appropriate fissile or fertile material in alloy, oxide, or carbide form in a steel covering and are arranged to form a cylindrical shape.
