Abstract
1302685 Controlling reactors SIEMENS AG 25 Sept 1970 [27 Sept 1969] 45907/70 Heading G6C In a pressurized-water nuclear reactor, output is adjusted by repositioning of a primary bank of control rods, while variations in xenon and Samarium poisoning, due to repositioning of the primary rods, are compensated by repositioning of a secondary bank of like control rods. The secondary bank may comprise subsidiary banks which are individually repositionable. Additional control rods, comprising only parts having neutron absorber, are used to improve output distribution over the core and are inserted to a depth dependent upon measured neutron flux. Changes in reactivity; due to fuel burn-up, are controlled by addition of boric acid to the coolant. Since the rods of the secondary bank are deeply inserted, while those of the primary bank are inserted only in upper regions of the core, their functions may be interchanged between banks when necessary to compensate for differing local burn-up.
