Abstract
854,901. Linear-dimension gauges. VERNON, G. W. Dec. 10, 1956, No. 37679/56. Class 106 (2). In a caliper-type gauge, the jaws 11, 14 are connected together by a parallel motion and one jaw 11 is connected to a supporting member 24 by another parallel motion, both parallel motions being lightly biased to a predetermined position. The support bar 24 is connected by spring strips 25, 26 to a bar 13 carrying one of the jaws 11. The bar 13 is connected by similar strips 17, 18, which may be integral with strips 25, 26, to a front bar 16 carrying the second jaw 14. The jaw facings 12, 15 are tapered as at 27, 28 to allow insertion of larger objects than the opening, in its stationary position, would permit. The jaws are biased to a predetermined position, either by the spring strips, or by springs connecting opposite corners of the two parallelograms. A dial indicator 31 is used as shown, to measure the opening of the jaws. In other embodiments, the indicator may be replaced by a nozzle for pneumatic gauging, an air-operated needle valve, an electrical contact indicator, or any other known type of suitable gauging device. The device may also be provided with jaws for gauging internal diameters or the jaws may be replaced by suitable means for gauging external or internal diameters of screw-threaded workpieces, and the arm 29 may be provided with adjustment means to enable the device to be zeroized correctly with a standard workpiece in position. Other adjustments can be provided to enable the gauge to cover a wide range of sizes. The spring strips may also be strengthened against longitudinal movement, as shown in Fig. 5, by bow-springs 34. The device may be used in a machine in which workpieces are moved mechanically into the gauge, and a plurality may be set up side by side to gauge closelyspaced dimensions.
