747,545. Gauges. STANDARD GAGE CO., Inc. July 14, 1954 [April 7, 1954], No. 20569/54. Class 106 (2). A gauge adaptable to measure the diameters of both external and internal screw-threads comprises a relatively stationary frame member 10, Fig. 1, having a slot 12 between upper and lower portions 16, 15 respectively and a movable U-shaped member 17 mounted for reciprocal movement relative to the frame 10 by means of two guide-rods 13, 14 supported in the portions 15, 16 and passing through bores 18, 20 in the limbs of the movable member 17. The member 17 is provided with two anvils 21, 22 which co-operate with the plunger 23 of a dial gauge 24 which can be mounted on the frame 10 either, as shown, to co-operate with the lower anvil 22 or can be reversed in position to cooperate with the upper anvil 21. Threadgauging elements 34, 37 (as shown, for measuring internalthreads) are mounted on bases sliding in T-shaped slots 33, 38 in the movable member 17 and the portion 15 of the stationary frame 10. A threaded bore 25 is provided in the portion 15 which is coaxial with a threaded bore 26, Fig. 2, in the lower arm of the movable member 17 and also with an unthreaded bore 27 in the portion 16 of the frame 10. For internal thread gauging a spring 30 is inserted in the bore 25 between a screw in the bore 26 and a screw 31 in the bore 25 so that the pressure of the spring 30 urges the gauging-members 34, 37 apart into contact with the surface to be gauged. The members 34, 37 can be urged together against this spring action by pressure between a finger grip 32 and hand-hold 11. For gauging external threads the dial gauge is reversed so that its plunger co-operates with the upper anvil 21, Fig. 2, and the spring 30 is inserted in the bore 27 and held therein by the screw 28 in the bore 26. The spring pressure in this case urges the external gauging members 45, 46 together and they may be separated for insertion of the test-piece by means of a fingerlever 41 having a cam surface 43 co-operating with a pin extending from the upper arm of the movable member 17. Sections of plastic material 60, 61, 62 may be inserted in the T- slot 33 to protect the external surface of the member 17.
