Abstract

A tripolymer of isobutylene, cyclodiene, and isoprene is made by mixing (a) 0,1-25 parts of a 5-8 carbon atom cyclodiene having two conjugated double bonds in a ring structure of 5 or 6 carbon atoms. (b) 0,1 to 25 parts of isoprene and (c) 99,8 to 50 parts of isobutylene, cooling the mixture to -150 to 50 DEG C., adding a Friedel-Crafts halide catalyst in an organic solvent which is liquid at the polymerization temperature and which does not form a complex with the catalyst and polymerizing. Cyclopentadiene, cyclo hexadiene, and their methyl and ethyl derivatives are the specified cyclodienes, aluminium chloride the specified catalyst and methyl chloride, ethyl chloride, ethylenedifluoride and carbon disulphide the specified solvents. The tripolymer may be vulcanized or it may be mixed with butyl rubber and vulcanized together with the usual additions.
