Abstract

Interpolymers are prepared from an iso-olefine, preferably isobutylene, and a tertiary triolefine by low temperature polymerization in the presence of a Friedal-Crafts catalyst. Specified tertiary triolefines are myrcene, 2.6-dimethyl - 4 - methylene - heptadiene - 2.5 and 2 - methyl hexatriene-1.3.5, other iso-olefines are 3-methyl butene-1 and 4-methyl pentene-1. The polymerization may be carried out in the presence of a diluent-refrigerant, e.g. liquid ethylene, liquid ethane or methane, or mixtures thereof, alone or in the presence of inert diluents, e.g. liquid butane or propane or liquid methyl or ethyl chloride. Alternatively, or in addition, an excess of solid carbon dioxide may be added. Polymerization temperatures as low as -165 DEG C. are desirable. The interpolymers may be mixed with sulphur, fillers, plasticisers and curing agents and cured to give a rubber-like material. Examples are given. Specification 513,521 is referred to.
