Abstract
Cyclododecatri- (1, 5, 9)-enes of the general formula C12X18 where each X is a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon radical are prepared concurrently with other cyclic olefines of at least eight carbon atoms and two double bonds in the ring by the polymerisation of a diolefine in the presence of a catalyst comprising a titanium halide and an alkyl aluminium halide at -20 DEG to 150 DEG C. A solvent such as an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon or a halogenated hydrocarbon may be used. Suitable diolefines are isoprene, piperylene, dimethyl butadiene and butadiene. Titanium tri- or tetra-chloride is preferred with ethyl aluminium dichloride or diethyl aluminium chloride, the molar ratio of Ti : Al being between 1: 3,5 and 1 : 5. The products may be hydrogenated to cyclododecene or cyclododecane and these hydrogenated products oxidised to decane-1, 10-di-carboxylic acid, also the triene may itself be oxidised to give succinic acid.
