Abstract

Ethylene and/or propylene are polymerized in a solvent with copper, silver or mercury acetylide. Specified solvents are butanes, pentanes, hexanes, heptanes, decanes, isooctane (preferred), mixtures thereof, benzene, toluene, xylene, and ethylbenzene and mixtures thereof. The acetylide may be used in the range from about 0.001 to 1 per cent by weight based on the olefin present, while the polymerization may take place at the decomposition temperature of the acetylide.
