Abstract
853,661. Electric tests. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. April 30, 1957 [Feb. 1, 1956], No. 3239/56. Class 37 The profile of a workpiece is compared with a standard by striking an arc between an electrode and the workpiece, causing the electrode to follow the desired profile and measuring some characteristic of the arc to indicate difference between the standard profile and the workpiece. As shown, Fig. 1, the standard and workpiece to be compared are each mounted, between one of a pair of headstocks 22, 23 and tailstocks 25, 26. A counter-balanced cross arm carries a probe 11 and the electrode 12, the probe resting on the profile of the standard and the electrode being spaced a small distance from the workpiece. The two headstocks are coupled and are rotated together by handle 34. Variations in the arc current representing differences between the profiles are indicated on meter 17. Circuit (Fig. 3). The spark is produced between the electrode 12 and workpiece 13, in the secondary winding of an E.H.T. transformer T1. The secondary is in series with a rectifier MR1 shunted by capacitors C1, C2, limiting resistor R1 and variable top resistor R2. A series of D.C. pulses passes through R2. Part of the voltage across the resistor is tapped off, amplified at V2, V3, and indicated on meter 16. Condensers Cl C2 maintain the gap ionized during the non-conducting half cycles. The constant reading on meter 16, produced by the capacity coupling of winding S1 with the transformer core is backed off by an anti-phase voltage derived from secondary winding S1<SP>1</SP>.
