Abstract

571,003. Determining physical qualities and dimensions of materials ; resistance measurements. BOYDELL, K. R. Oct. 1, 1943, No. 16158. [Class 37] In strain gauging apparatus of the type in which the variations of potential of a direct current produced by the strain gauges are fed to an amplifier, the output of which operates an indicating or recording device, the input to the amplifier is periodically interrupted so that steady stresses may be measured as well as alternating stresses. The voltage to be measured is compared with a datum voltage, and the interruption of the input to the amplifier is such that the duration of the impulses is markedly different from the intervals between them. The strain gauges 1, 2 are connected in a bridge circuit energized from a D.C. source 3. Leads 4, 5 are connected to the input terminals of a thermionic amplifier 6, the output of which is connected to a recording device 7, which may be an oscillograph of the mirror galvanometer type. Alternatively, a voltmeter 8 may be employed. A condenser 9 prevents the passage of D.C. to the amplifier 6. Between the leads 4, 5 is a switch 10 which, when closed, short-circuits the input to the amplifier. This is opened and closed rapidly by a cam 12 driven by a motor 11. The cam 12 is designed so that the duration of the impulses is markedly different from the intervals between them, to give recognisably different wave-forms according as the variations in potential are in a positive or negative direction from the datum value.
