852,544. Toothed gearing. N S U WERKE A.G. Oct. 29, 1957 [Nov. 23, 1956], No. 33684/57. Class 80 (1). [Also in Group XXXI] In a vehicle steering gear a rack 1 of square or rectangular section is held against a pinion 2 by a roller 3 bearing against the back of the rack, the roller being rotatable on an eccentrically adjustable bolt. The rack is additionally guided by a slide box 4 mounted in a tubular casing 6 extending from the casing 5 of the pinion and roller. The casings 5, 6 are secured respectively to sections 10<SP>1</SP>, 10 mounted on the vehicle axle carrier 13. In order to centre the rack 1 for straight-ahead steering a spring 7 is mounted between collars 8 which are slidably but non- rotatably mounted on the rack and are located thereon by pins projecting through the rack, outward movement of the collars being limited by projections in the fixed casing 6. The periphery of each collar 8 is notched so that during assembly it may be inserted through the projections in the casing and then turned as in a bayonet connection. The slide box 4 is secured in the casing 6 by a similar connection. The position of the casing 6 relatively to the section 10 may be adjusted by interposing washers 9 in order to adjust the straight-ahead steering position.
