Abstract
A paper-sizing agent is prepared by (i) adding an a , b -ethylenically-unsaturated polycarboxylic acid or anhydride to a resin comprising colophony at an elevated temperature to form an addition product without effecting intramolecular conversion, (ii) partially neutralizing the addition product with a base, (iii) partially esterifying the partially neutralized product with a monohydric alcohol and (iv) neutralizing the partially esterified product with a base. Preferred components for stage (i) are maleic, fumaric, itaconic or dehydrated citric acids or anhydrides and gum or wood resin; for stage (ii) NaOH; for stage (iii) a half ether of oleylalcohol with a polyoxyethylene alcohol of about 20 oxyethylene groups per molecule; stage (iv) is preferably subdivided so that the partially esterified product is partially neutralized with an organic base (e.g. trielthanolamine) and is finally neutralized with an inorganic base (e.g. NaOH). The aqueous product may be spray dried or may be mixed with stabilizing agents (casien, gelatin or glue) or precipitants (e.g. Al2(SO4)3), and used to size paper pulp (e.g. bleached sulphite cellulose and caustic sodakraft cellulose).
