Abstract

A paper sizing material comprises a resinous reaction product of rosin and an aliphatic olefinic dicarboxylic acid or anhydride containing the grouping <FORM:0755149/IV(a)/1> the product being free from rosin oils. It is prepared by heating rosin and the acid or anhydride at 200-260 DEG C. under reduced pressure, or by first heating the rosin under reduced pressure at 200-260 DEG C. or steam disl tilling it to remove the oils and then reacting with the acid or anhydride. By "reduced pressure" is meant pressure of the order of 15 to 200 mm. Hg. Examples of acidic compounds are maleic, fumaric, citraconic and itaconic acids and anhydrides. The products may be neutralized with caustic soda. The proportions of ingredients may vary so that the final product contains some unreacted rosin.
