Abstract

1483902 Paper sizing compositions TENNECO CHEMICALS Inc 28 Nov 1975 [29 Nov 1974] 51845/74 Heading C3R A paper sizing composition comprises a stable aqueous dispersion or solution of the product obtained by fortifying a resin by reaction with an alpha, beta-unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride and then disproportionating the fortified resin substantially to eliminate abietic acid. The resin may have been reacted with formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst, prior to fortification. The disproportionated fortified resin may be partially saponified with a base. In examples tall oil resin is reacted with paraformaldehyde in the presence of para-toluene sulphonic acid; fortified by reaction with maleic anhydride and then disproportionated by reaction with iron resinate and iodine; some of the products are partially saponified with caustic potash and caustic soda and dispersed in water and others dispersed in water without saponification; stabilizers are provided by adding caustic potash, casein and borax and by adding casein and ammonia.
