Abstract
1442074 Dispersions of rosin derivatives HERCULES Inc 28 May 1974 23555/74 Heading C3R A process for preparing a stable aqueous dispersion of rosin-base material for use in the sizing of cellulosic papermaking fibres comprises homogenizing under a pressure of from 2000 to 8000 p.s.i.g. and at 150 to 195 C. an aqueous dispersion containing, by weight 5 to 25 per cent solids consisting by weight of from 0 to 95 per cent rosin and from 100 to 5 per cent of an adduct reaction product of rosin and an acidic compound containing the group, the amount of adducted acidic compound being from 1 to 20 per cent of the total solids weight, the process being carried out in the presence of an anionic dispersing agent. The anionic dispersing agent may be saponified rosin-base material. In examples dispersions are prepared in which the rosin material is fused tall oil rosin, distilled hydrogenated wood rosin, wood rosin and formaldehyde treated tall oil rosin, the adducts are prepared by reaction with fumaric acid and the anionic dispersing agents are those obtained by saponifying rosin material with sodium hydroxide and with ammonium hydroxide and the sodium salts of an alkyl benzene sulphonate, a condensed naphthalene sulphonic acid and an alkyl aryl sulphonate, sodium lauryl sulphate, the dioctyl ester of sodium sulphosuccinic acid and the ammonium salt of the sulphate ester of an alkylphenoxy (polyethyleneoxyethanol).
