1297374 Aqueous suspensions of rosin and rosin adducts HERCULES Inc 18 Nov 1969 56477/69 Heading C4D [Also in Divisions C3 and D2] An aqueous suspension of rosin material having particles of size between 0À03 and 3 microns, comprises 95 to 40% water and 5 to 60% rosin material, the rosin material comprising 0 to 95% rosin and 100 to 5% of an adduct reaction product of rosin and an acidic compound containing a group, the amount of adducted acidic compound being from 1 to 20% of the weight of the rosin material, a portion of the rosin material being saponified to act as a dispersing agent for the suspension, the amount saponified being from 0À5 to 20% of the available carboxyl groups. At least 20% by weight of the particles have a size less than 0À3 microns. The suspension is prepared by mixing water with a solution of the rosin material in a water-immiscible organic solvent, homogenizing the mixture and removing all the solvents, e.g. by distillation at reduced pressure. In examples, suspensions are made of wood rosin, hydrogenated wood rosin, formaldehyde-treated wood rosin, wood rosin adducted with fumaric acid with and without subsequent hydrogenation, and wood rosin adducted with maleic anhydride; the rosin materials are partially saponified with potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide and the solvents used are benzene and carbontetrachloride; in one instance morpholine is added to the composition and in another a terpene dimer is added.
