Abstract

Menthol acid polycarboxylic esters for incorporation in tobacco (see Group VI) are prepared using normal methods, by reacting maleic anhydride and menthol to give menthol acid maleate of m.p. 83-85 DEG C. or by alcoholysis of di-menthyl maleate with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution to give menthol acid maleate of m.p. 84-85 DEG C., by reacting succinic anhydride and menthol to give menthol acid succinate of m.p. 58-59 DEG C., and by reacting menthol and hemimellitic acid using p-toluene sulphonic acid as a catalyst to give menthol acid hemimellitate.ALSO:A smoking tobacco is treated by incorporating therein a mono-ester of menthol and a polycarboxylic acid or anhydride thereof. The acid may be saturated or unsaturated aliphatic or aromatic or heteroaromatic and 18 examples of suitable acids are given. Examples are given of methods for incorporating the ester in the tobacco by spraying with or dipping in a solution or suspension of the ester. The ester may also be applied to the paper or leaf wrapper of the tobacco product. Methods for the preparation of monomenthylmaleate, monomenthylsuccinate and monomenthylhemimellitate are included (see Group IV (b)).
