METHOD OF TREATING TOBACCO.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in the treatment and preparation of tobacco to be manufactured into cigarettes, or otherwise prepared for smok- 5 ing, by combining with the tobacco various ingredients, as hereinafter described, by means of which the tobacco will be rendered cooling and soothing to irritated membranes of the mouth and throat of the smoker and non-injurious and pleasant to the taste.
The following is a typical example of my method made in accordance with my invention and for affording an understanding of the process Without limitation of the invention, as variations may be made within the range stated without departing from Application filed October 27, 1927. ciple eucalyptol (O l-I 0), 4 ounces; mentha piperitae (containing at least 5% esters, calculated in terms of menthyl acetate, C H C ILO and natural menthol at least 50% (C H OI-I), 10 ounces; and menthol 100% (isolation) (C H OH), 6 ounces.
The essential oils consisting of mentha piperitae and oil of eucalyptus collectively or separately serve as a solvent for the menthol thereby causing the ingredients to blend. The above ingredients may be mixed in more or less quantity without greatly affecting the product.
' Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. The process of treating cigarette tobacco which consists in applying menthol in solution in oil of eucalyptus, to the tobacco.
2. The process of treating cigarette tobacco which consists in applying a solution of menthol in oil of eucalyptus, carrying mentha piperatae, to the tobacco.
3. Cigarette tobacco treated with menthol in solution in oil of eucalyptus, whereby the smoking qualities of the tobacco are im- 65 proved.
